Gender Selection Process :

  1. Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT):
    • During IVF, multiple embryos are created in a laboratory through fertilization of eggs with sperm. After a few days of growth, a small sample of cells is removed from each embryo for genetic testing.
    • The embryos are then screened to determine their sex, and only embryos of the desired sex are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus.
    • PGT is typically used in cases where there is a risk of passing on genetic disorders linked to a specific sex or when couples have a strong preference for a particular gender.
  2. Sperm Sorting:
    • Sperm sorting, also known as sperm sex selection, involves separating sperm based on their X or Y chromosomes, which determine the sex of the resulting offspring.
    • Techniques such as flow cytometry or density gradient centrifugation are used to separate sperm based on their DNA content, as sperm carrying X chromosomes (responsible for female offspring) have slightly different DNA content than those carrying Y chromosomes (responsible for male offspring).
    • The sorted sperm are then used for artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization to increase the likelihood of conceiving a baby of the desired sex.
    • Sperm sorting techniques are less commonly used than PGT and may have lower success rates.
